THE DORSET ASSOCIATION FOR THE DISABLED is affiliated to R.A.D.A.R. and was set up in 1951 to provide additional services and social amenities for disabled people in the County of Dorset. Its aims were, and still are, to complement and supplement services provided by the statutory welfare authorities with whom the Association has enjoyed a long and harmonious relationship. From one small branch the Association has now spread throughout the County providing help and information to people with disabilities and their cares via fourteen branches.

We have local branches in:-

  • Beaminster
  • Bridport
  • Christchurch
  • Dorchester
  • Poole
  • Portland
  • Shaftesbury
  • Sherborne
  • Sturminster Newton
  • Swanage
  • Verwood
  • Wareham
  • Weymouth
  • Wimborne

The Association incorporates Swanage Tapes who provide a monthly magazine of local interest in audio cassette format. These are delivered personally to people with disabilities who live in and around the Swanage area and are unable to get out and about.

D.A.D. volunteers raise funds by flag days, sales of work, coffee mornings, car boot sales, raffles, donations and covenants etc.

We provide:

  • Local clubs
  • A wide variety of entertainment
  • Shopping trips
  • Handicraft groups
  • Home visiting service
  • Transport to and from activities where appropriate
  • Quarterly newsletter
  • Year Book
  • Countywide activities
  • Advice and information
  • Public training on access/disability issues
Members pay a small annual subscription and are entitled to any of the services we offer. Membership is open to all people with disabilities living in Dorset and Associate Members may be relatives, carers, helpers, or any other interested people.

Volunteers are always required to help at clubs with refreshments, as drivers (agreed mileage rate reimbursed) and carers. Each branch has its own small committee and organises its own fund-raising events. Please contact us if you would like to help in some way.

County Office is normally open weekday mornings (except public holidays) from 9.00am to 12 noon for telephone enquiries or personal callers wanting information, copies of our publications or to purchase RADAR Keys. There is an answerphone service available at other times.
